French Onion Soup Grilled Cheese Sandwich
A French Onion Soup Grilled Cheese Sandwich didn’t seem quite as crazy as my Spaghetti & Meatball Grilled Cheese Sandwich last week. Boy did I catch some flack for that one from the healthy-eating police.
So let me get this out of the way right up front…I do not encourage my readers to eat French Onion Soup Grilled Cheese Sandwiches for every meal. Just when you have a craving for caramelized onions, smothered with melty Gruyere cheese, sandwiched between a fresh bakery onion roll, and grilled into goodness. And only then.
French Onion Soup Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Ingredients
- 1 cup caramelized onions see recipe link in post
- 4 oz. Gruyere cheese shredded
- 2 fresh bakery onion rolls
- 2 Tbl. butter softened
- beef broth for dipping
Instructions
- Prepare caramelized onions according to recipe link. Slice onion rolls and butter outsides of each. Heat skillet over medium heat. Place bottom half of each roll into skillet. Pile half of onions on each, topped with half of the cheese. Replace top halves of buns.
- Grill until bottoms are golden brown. Carefully turn over each sandwich and cook until tops are golden.
- Serve with warm beef broth for dipping.

Well this is an exemplary grilled cheese sandwich covering all the flavors of french onion soup. I may have to make these – and very soon!

The only thing that is preventing me from making this sandwich today is I do not have the onion rolls. That is a quick fix this weekend. I can’t wait to make and eat it!

Thanks Cydnee. Our local Publix generally has the onion rolls, hopefully yours does too. Enjoy!!

Not an onion fan normally, but this was amazing. My daughter thought it would be even better with Pastrami on it.

Thank you so much. Caramelizing the onions makes them so sweet doesn’t it. And pastrami on anything sounds wonderful. Hmmm, may have to come up with a new sandwich to share. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment Maureen. Take care, Libby

As for me, I’m old enough, fiesty enough, and stubborn enough to eat one whenever I WANT!!!!! Being ancient has its advantages ;) Thank you darlin’! xoxo

Hi Dianna. I just added the recipe to this post. There’s a link for the Caramelized Onions recipe in the post as well. They are really the star of this yummy sandwich. Hope you enjoy it. Libby
